Title: DESIGNING ARTIFICIAL REVERBERATORS FOR SIMULATING COUPLED ROOM ACOUSTICS IN GAMES

Thesis Abstract :Virtual acoustics is an essential for 3D computer games and simulations. There exist a variety of room acoustics simulators for use with such applications. These simulators typically have a very high computational cost, making them infeasible for real-time and interactive operation. Instead, artificial reverberators which cannot successfully simulate the actual acoustics of the room are used as a perceptually accurate substitute. Scattering delay networks (SDN) are a new class of artificial reverberators which can also accurately model room acoustics. While SDN models can be used for simple room shapes, they have now been applied to connected spaces (e.g. mazes) which are encountered in games. This thesis will investigate SDNs with connected rooms for the first time with a generic approach called Merge Node (MN). The MN is conceivable as a node where the effects of the connection on the sound is reduced to a single point.
