FAQ

1. What is METU-Online? Why should I use it?

METU-Online is a web based e-learning platform. You can reach METU- ONline trough the link ODTUCLASS.

2. I do not have a registered METU-Online account. What should I do?

Many of the students are registered to METU-Online at the beginning of the terms. If they don't have an account, they should send a mail to odtuclass@metu.edu.tr with their "Name", "Surname", "Student Number", "Department" and "Email" (please keep in mind that the e-mail must have a METU extension).

3. How can I make use of electronic resources provided by the METU Library?

You can access to the METU Library homepage through METU LIBRARY. Over this page, it is possible to make searches of electronic resources in the Library Catalog. Moreover, it is also possible to keep track of the books, which you have borrowed from the library, by your user-name and password.

4. Is it possible to access to online databases and e-journals outside the campus?

METU members can have access to online databases and e-journals outside the campus following the instructions at http://lib.metu.edu.tr/remote-access.

5. When I try to access to an e-journal, user name and password is being asked. Why?

Any journal registered by the METU Library can be accessed in the campus without any password. If a password is being asked during in campus access, the problem might be due to some online error or the publishing company's fault. Please inform us by e-mail to lib-hot-line@metu.edu.tr for related problems.

6. How can I find electronic journals related to my subject?

Through the E-Journal Search (http://zu4lr5yf7s.search.serialssolutions.com/) in the Library's website (http://lib.metu.edu.tr/), you'll see the lists of journals.

7. How can I search for articles?

You can search articles in the Federated Search (http://zu4lr5yf7s.cs.serialssolutions.com/) page. The Central Search is only for METU members' use. The other users need to come to the Library for article searches.

8. I have a problem with my ethernet connection at Student Dormitories. What should I do?

Please contact with METU Computer Center for further help.

9. Is there a wireless access point in Informatics Institute?

Yes. Wireless routers are placed in publicly accessible points within the Institute Building. All students can freely benefit from wireless Internet connection. Please see “How can I connect to Informatics Institute network via wireless connection” section for more information about establishing wireless Internet connections.

10. How can I connect to Informatics Institute network via wireless connection?

Network connections are managed through a DHCP server in our institute. Students can only connect Informatics Institute network via wireless. To benefit from wireless connection you have to apply to the system administrators to register your computers physical address on the DHCP server and obtain a wireless access password. Information about your computers physical address (a brief tutorial on how to find your computers physical address can be found under Network Connections section) and your contact info must be provided upon this application.

11. What are the ng2k and eduroam wireless access points? How can I connect them?

There are two different IEEE *802.11agn* standard wireless networks in the Middle East Technical University Campus. The first one is eduroam, which stands for Education Roaming. eduroam runs on a RADIUS-based infrastructure that uses 802.1x security technology to allow for inter-institutional roaming. For more information about this network and the details of how to set it, please go to eduroam page (http://eduroam.metu.edu.tr). The second broadcast is ng2k. This one’s SSID broadcast is without any encryption. MAC address based identification confirmation system operates on these networks. In order to connect to the wireless network it is sufficent to fill the from at, http://netregister.cc.metu.edu.tr. Detailed information may be obtained at the http://wireless.cc.metu.edu.tr address.

12. What are the network regulations and rules?

METU Computer Center has a set of network rules and regulations (see https://cc.metu.edu.tr/index_eng.php?go=ng&sub=wlan_kural), which helps us to assure network security. All users within Informatics Institutes network have to obey these rules. METU Computer Center monitors each and every client’s network activity. If clients do not conform to METU network rules and regulations, their connection can be disabled with a restriction on their physical address over the network.

13. How can I reactivate the IP access of my computer?

You can find a list of physical addresses, which are restricted by METU Computer Center, on http://affected.metu.edu.tr/. Please contact with system administrators in the Informatics Institute if you suspect that your IP access is restricted.

14. How can I find my computers physical address (MAC address)?

Linux

On Linux systems, the ethernet device is typically called eth0.

In order to find the MAC address of the ethernet device, you must first become root, through the use of su. Then, type ifconfig -a and look up the relevant info. For example:

# ifconfig -a

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:08:C4:99:AA

inet addr:131.225.84.67 Bcast:131.225.87.255 Mask:255.255.248.0

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets:15647904 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

TX packets:69559 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

The MAC address is the HWaddr listed on the first line. In the case of this machine, it is 00:60:08:C4:99:AA.

Windows 95

If you have TCP/IP installed, run winipcfg (click Start, then Run, then type winipcfg in the text box.)

Once the program runs, look for a box marked Adapter Address. This is your MAC address.

Windows NT

If you have TCP/IP installed, run ipconfig /all from an MS-DOS shell window.

Windows XP/2000

If you have TCP/IP installed, run ipconfig/all from a Command Prompt window.

(click Start, then Run, then type cmd in the text box.) Type in ipconfig/all in the Command Prompt Window.

The 12-digit Physical Address is the same as MAC address

Note that you will need to register all MAC addresses in cases where you have both wired and wireless interface in your system.

Windows Vista

From the start menu, enter Cmd in the search window. The Command Prompt Application will appear in the Results Pane. Double click it to launch the application.

Type in the command ipconfig /all (note the space) and enter. You should see something similar to the following.

Note that you need the MAC address of your Ethernet card, not your wireless card.

Mac OS X

Open 'System Preferences' (usually found in the Dock) and select Network.

Pick a location and specify the interface whose MAC address is desired in the Show: drop down list.

For 'Built-in Ethernet', select the Ethernet tab. Read the MAC address labeled 'Ethernet ID:'.

For wireless, select 'Airport' in the Show: dialog. Read the MAC address labeled 'Airport ID:'.

Mac Open Transport

Open the AppleTalk control panel. Go to the Edit Menu and select User Mode.

Select the Advanced radio button and click OK.

Click info.

The MAC address is displayed in the AppleTalk Info window.

15. What are the currently running electronic lists in Informatics Institute? How can I use them?

There are a plenty of different e-mail lists to satisfy the needs (for instance communication, announcements etc.) of both academic personnel and student of our Institute. If you are a student you should be automatically invited to the mailing list of the department that you are registered (cogs, is, ion, min, modsim, sm or wb) to in the first week of each term. You can post messages to the mailing lists by using the specified e-mail address of that list. Your posts are publicly available to each and every member of that list. You can get a detailed information about the electronic lists from the list administrator (Please see "How can I get registered to an electronic list" section for the list administrators contact details). Do not forget that your metu e-mail address is subscribed to the e-mail lists.

16. How can I get registered to an electronic list?

If you think that you should be registered to an electronic list, please contact with the list administrator. You can use the contact form.
